Taco Tuesday at Ryder’s Tavern

This week I finally got a chance to stop by Ryder’s Tavern in Tower Grove South and experience their (fast becoming legendary) Taco Tuesday.

This event is a pop-up dining experience spearheaded by Chef Brandon Busby (@SouthCitySauces) of Copper Pig. Be aware, these are not your average tacos. Experimentation and pushing the menu is important to Busby, resulting in dishes like sushi-grade spicy tuna tacos, lamb with mint tacos, and a mind-and-taste bud confounding duck/Gorgonzola/pear combo. (Confounding in a good way, to be clear.)

I stopped by early on Tuesday to get a feel for the place (I haven’t been in much since the now-defunct Bleeding Deacon occupied the space.) I ordered a house-made black cherry margarita ($4) from bartender Patrick Gioia, and was able to test his standard and raspberry versions as well (all excellent.) Go for the black cherry if you prefer sour, the raspberry if you prefer sweet.

Chef Busby puts out a new menu each week, and ordering is done sushi style, with patrons filling out preprinted order forms for how many of each style of taco they’d like. Prices ranged from $2.50-$4.25 per taco, and I selected four, the duck, the tuna, a shrimp po’ boy, and the lamb. Each one was an entirely unique experience. I really appreciated the care and attention put into the design of each item.

Taco Tuesday is currently happening each Tuesday at Ryder’s, from 5 p.m. to close or sellout, whichever comes first. Be aware that the kitchen is tiny and the demand is high, so don’t be in a giant hurry to get your food. Bring a good friend or a good book, relax and enjoy the bar’s atmosphere, either inside or on the back patio. Sample a few margaritas or craft beers and get ready to have a brand new culinary experience.

Ryder’s Tavern is cash-only (ATM on site) and the pop-up dining is also cash only, with payment separate from your bar tab.
