Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House – Photo Gallery

Last week we visited the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield. Although this is technically outside St. Louis “city” boundaries, it’s owned and operated by the Missouri Botanical Garden which is based in the city, so I think that’s fair game for a St. Louis related blog, don’t you?

At the Butterfly House, visitors have a chance to wander through the conservatory and be surrounded by hundreds of free-flying butterflies. Be aware that the conservatory is very warm—the butterflies are tropical creatures—so depending on your heat tolerance you may have to exit the conservatory and re-enter once you’ve cooled down. But while you’re inside? Oh the magic.

From their website:

More than a thousand live tropical butterflies fly freely in the glass conservatory at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Watch a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis right before your eyes. Or go outside and visit native and migrating species in the Butterfly Garden.

The butterfly house is situated on lovely grounds in Faust Park, near the St. Louis Carousel, and adjoining a playground and picnic area. The center that contains the butterfly conservatory also houses educational resources for children and a gift shop, as well as a display of non-butterfly creepy crawlies, like giant cockroaches and tarantulas.

They host private events, including wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, funeral gatherings, children’s birthday parties, and they also hold various themed festivals throughout the year. You can check out their Facebook page for event updates and photos of their residents.

One of their friendly volunteers explained that the butterflies inside the conservatory live about 2-3 weeks, which is much longer than their average life span in the wild.
